Volunteer Information

What?

Step off campus one afternoon a week to participate in a fun and rewarding experience in the local community! Build a positive relationship with a Latina/o emergent bilingual student in grades 3-8 while assisting the child with reading and homework completion. Spanish-speaking skills are helpful, but not required.

Garden Hills Academy

When?

The SOAR after-school program takes place from 2:45-4:15pm every Tuesday and Thursday at Garden Hills Academy from February to April, 2026. You are asked to make a weekly volunteer commitment on the day that best fits into your semester schedule.

Why volunteer?

The SOAR program provides volunteers the opportunity to . . .

  • read and discuss books with a child.
  • be a tutor/mentor/positive role model to a child.
  • participate in a program that promotes positive cross-cultural understanding.
  • speak Spanish with emergent bilingual/biliterate children.
  • learn with children in the local community.
