SOAR: Student Opportunities for After-School Resources

Volunteer Information

What?

Step off campus one afternoon a week to participate in a fun and rewarding experience in the local community! Build a positive relationship with a Latina/o emergent bilingual student in grades 3-5 while assisting the child with reading and homework completion. Spanish-speaking skills are helpful, but not required.

Where?

International Prep Academy (IPA)
1605 W. Kirby Ave., Champaign, IL 61821

IPA is a Spanish/English dual language school in the Champaign Unit 4 School District.

How do I get to the Elementary School?

The 10 Gold MTD bus route offers a convenient ride from campus to IPA with a bus stop in the front of the school (intersection of Kirby and Rose). There is also the possibility of carpooling with other tutors.

When?

The SOAR after-school program takes place from 2:00-3:30pm every Tuesday and Wednesday at the International Prep Academy. You are asked to make a weekly volunteer commitment on the day that best fits into your semester schedule.

Why volunteer?

The SOAR program provides volunteers the opportunity to . . .

  • read and discuss books with a child.
  • be a tutor/mentor/positive role model to a child.
  • participate in a program that promotes positive cross-cultural understanding.
  • speak Spanish with emergent bilingual/biliterate children.
  • learn with children in the local community.
